A violent protest erupted outside the Ridglan Farms beagle breeding and research facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, as approximately 1,000 animal welfare activists attempted to enter the premises on Saturday. The response from local police included the deployment of rubber bullets and pepper spray as they turned back protesters seeking to rescue beagles reportedly held in questionable conditions.

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett stated in a video that a section of the crowd—300 to 400 individuals—was 'violently trying to break into the property' and posed a threat to law enforcement. As a result, authorities arrested several individuals, including the protest's leader, who was apprehended during efforts to breach the facility's heavily fortified perimeter, which included barriers such as a manure-filled trench and hay bales.

During the altercation, sheriff's officers emphasized that protesters ignored designated areas for peaceful assembly, causing significant disruption to traffic and emergency services. Activists expressed their frustration at being unable to seize any dogs from the facility, noting that they felt 'defeated' after three hours of confrontation.

This incident followed a previous protest in March when a group managed to take 30 beagles from the same facility, resulting in several arrests. Ridglan Farms has denied allegations of animal mistreatment but agreed to relinquish its state breeding license effective July 1, as part of a settlement to avert prosecution over animal welfare violations.

In light of Saturday's events, sparked by plans from the Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs, activists later shifted their protest to the Madison jail, where they continued to advocate for the righ. Ridglan's official statements claim there has been no credible evidence of animal abuse at their facility.
