Former Zambian minister killed in security raid linked to opposition house

When Zambia's presidential election ended last week, security forces moved in on a house linked to opposition leader Brian Mundubile, killing former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya and arresting 11 others.


Kafwaya – a 49‑year‑old MP who served as a minister under past presidents – was reported to have been shot during what police called an "exchange of fire" during the operation in Lusaka on Friday.


Authorities accused Mundubile's party, the NRPUP, of "insurgency" and "militia activity" amid claims that the raid aimed to silence opposition voices after Hichilema secured a second term with 60 % of the vote.


The opposition confirms the allegations as false and notes the absence of any clear forensic evidence, citing a hurried eviction of the house and a lack of transparency in the operation.


International observers have flagged irregularities in the post‑election vote counting, calling for clearer transparency, while human rights groups demand accountability for detainees and those who remain missing.
