A second US crew member who was missing in Iran after an American F-15 fighter jet was shot down has been rescued. Posting to social media, US President Donald Trump said the rescued weapons systems officer had sustained injuries but would be just fine, describing the rescue as one of the most daring search and rescue operations in US history.
Following the downing of the aircraft on Friday, both the pilot and crew member ejected - with the pilot recovered shortly afterwards. Both the US and Iran scrambled to locate the missing crew member in a mountainous region of southwestern Iran. The search posed a critical challenge, with concerns that the airman could become a prisoner of war if captured by Iranian forces.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) initiated its search efforts, reportedly utilizing local troops and extending a reward of approximately $66,000 for capturing the missing airman alive. Footage circulated on social media depicted crowds gathering in the mountainous area for the search efforts.
Details about the crew member’s rescue surfaced late Saturday, with Trump confirming the successful mission, stating WE GOT HIM! and identifying the crew member as a respected colonel. The operation, labeled huge by insiders, involved considerable air support. Reports mentioned possible engagements between US and Iranian forces during the rescue mission.
Despite the successful retrieval of the airman, complications arose when Iran stated that five of its personnel were killed as a result of the US operation. The complexities were further heightened by ongoing regional violence, with reports of falling debris from an Iranian missile causing fires in Abu Dhabi, alongside attacks occurring in neighboring Kuwait and Israel.
As the dust settles from this high-stakes operation, the operational dynamics between the US and Iran continue to be closely monitored amid escalating military tensions.
