Five individuals tragically lost their lives when a tour bus overturned on the New York State Thruway, according to reports from New York State Police. The accident occurred as the bus was transporting a group returning from Niagara Falls, a popular destination on the US-Canada border, back to New York City.
The victims included tourists from India, China, and the Philippines, creating a wave of grief across their respective communities. New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that local officials are diligently working to provide aid and support to those affected by the tragedy.
Emergency responders, including ambulances and medical helicopters, rushed to the crash site, located near Pembroke—approximately 30 miles east of Buffalo. Initially, it was reported that a child was among the deceased, but authorities later confirmed that this was not the case.
The bus, carrying 52 passengers aged between one and 74, lost control and overturned, with many victims reportedly ejected from the vehicle. Initial investigations indicate that seatbelt usage was low among passengers and some individuals remained trapped within the wreckage for an extended period.
To aid the investigation, police have brought in translators and translation devices to communicate with witnesses and victims. According to New York State Police Troop Commander Andre Ray Major, the investigation remains ongoing, but mechanical failure and operator impairment have been excluded as potential causes. The operator has been cooperative, and no charges have been filed so far.
Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic aftermath, with items scattered across the roadway and glass shards everywhere. In one report, a witness recounted seeing the bus lying on its side and people seeming conscious, although the situation was alarming.
In the local hospital, 24 adult patients were admitted, all anticipated to make a full recovery, while young survivors were transported to a children's hospital for further care.
As the community rallies in support, ConnectLife, a blood donation organization, has launched an emergency appeal due to the urgent needs resulting from the crash. Sarah Diina, a spokeswoman for ConnectLife, urged locals to respond, emphasizing the dire need for blood transfusions.
Additionally, the Red Cross has established a family reunification center to assist in reconnecting children with their parents who were dispersed across different hospitals. Authorities are requesting any drivers with dashcam footage of the incident to come forth to aid in a thorough investigation into the calamity.
