Trump Delays Meeting with Xi Jinping Amidst Iran Conflict

US President Donald Trump mentioned on Monday that he is planning to delay a high stakes visit to China later in March by about a month due to the ongoing war in Iran. We've requested that we delay it a month or so, he stated, emphasizing the importance of his presence in overseeing the conflict.

The meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was originally scheduled for March 31 to April 2, following their previous talks last October. Chinese foreign affairs spokesman Lin Jian confirmed that both sides are currently discussing the timing and other details about Trump’s visit.

The ongoing Iran war has overshadowed many of Trump’s foreign policy initiatives, raising concerns regarding regional stability and the potential impact on global oil supplies. Trump reiterated that the decision to postpone the meeting is to ensure he remains available to effectively manage the war situation.

Trump expressed his anticipation for a positive meeting with Xi, stating, I'm looking forward to being with him. We have a very good relationship. He clarified that the delay was not influenced by any demands from Washington for China's assistance in the Gulf or trade disputes.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the delay revolves around coordinating war efforts rather than diplomatic disagreements. In recent dialogues, US and Chinese representatives have been discussing economic issues, including tariffs, amid growing tensions stemming from the Iran conflict and concerns over trade practices.

Negotiations between the nations continue, with both sides showing some consensus on several economic matters. However, the toll of the Iran war on global economics and its implications on US-China relations complicate the diplomatic landscape.
