FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The FBI reported Wednesday that a suspicious package found outside a gate at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa earlier this week contained possible energetic materials. An analysis is ongoing, according to the FBI Tampa.
Energetic materials, which may include explosives, fuels, or propellants, store significant chemical energy. The FBI has not clarified the specific materials in the package discovered on Monday near the base's Visitor Center.
On the same day, a threat prompted a shelter-in-place order at the base. Officials emphasized that they are taking all threats seriously, stating, We will not release specifics on security measures that have been implemented, as they prioritize safety and security.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted about two hours later, but MacDill remains vigilant, operating under FPCON CHARLIE—the second-highest military security level that allows for proactive measures. Personnel are advised to report any suspicious activity.
MacDill is home to the U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations across parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. The heightened alert status follows recent military confrontations, including the tragic crash of a KC-135 refueling aircraft last week that resulted in the loss of all six crew members, three of whom were associated with the 6th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill.
