The Trump administration's top official on counterterrorism has resigned from his position, citing opposition to the war in Iran, and urged the president to reverse course. In a letter posted on Tuesday to his X account, National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent stated that Iran posed no imminent threat to the US and claimed that the Trump administration started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.

Kent, a 45-year-old veteran of the US special forces and CIA, noted in his letter that he could not support sending the next generation off to fight in a war that does not justify the cost of American lives. He emphasized his military service and personal history, particularly mentioning the loss of his wife, a navy cryptologic technician, who was killed in a suicide bombing in Syria in 2019.

Kent's resignation makes him the most high-profile figure from within the Trump administration to publicly criticize the US-Israeli operations in Iran. In his statement, he asserted that he had previously supported Trump's foreign policy but became disillusioned as he believed the narrative about Iran's threat was driven by misinformation. Kent's departure follows a trend of resignations among senior officials in Trump’s administration, although the current term has seen less turnover compared to the previous one.

In his letter, Kent claimed that high-ranking Israeli officials and influential US journalists fostered misconceptions about Iran that led Trump to undermine his America First campaign. He described this tendency as an echo chamber that misled the president regarding Iran's threat level.

Kent notably faced scrutiny during his confirmation process due to his connections with extremist groups and his failure to refute claims regarding the January 6 riots at the US Capitol. Kent's remarks and actions have sparked ongoing debates surrounding the motivations and implications of US military actions in the Middle East.
