South Korean cryptocurrency entrepreneur Do Kwon will soon be extradited to the United States from Montenegro, marking a significant move in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the disastrous collapse of the TerraUSD and Luna tokens. Kwon has been under scrutiny from US and South Korean authorities since the failure of his company Terraform Labs, which resulted in a staggering loss of approximately $40 billion for investors and triggered turmoil across global cryptocurrency markets.

Despite Montenegro lacking established extradition treaties with either the US or South Korea, the case underwent extensive court deliberations, ultimately concluding with the endorsement of Kwon's extradition on legal grounds. “The Minister of Justice, Bojan Bozovic, issued a decision approving the extradition of the accused, Kwon Do Hyung, to the United States of America,” stated the Ministry of Justice. It was further noted that Kwon consented to the extradition requests from both nations.

In February, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Kwon and Terraform Labs for "orchestrating a multi-billion dollar crypto asset securities fraud." SEC Chairman Gary Gensler emphasized that Kwon and his company failed to provide adequate and truthful disclosures to their investors regarding the nature and stability of the cryptocurrency assets, particularly those linked to Luna and TerraUSD. The allegations claim Kwon misrepresented the tokens' performance and their future value, misguiding thousands of investors.

The downfall of TerraUSD and Luna in May 2022 sparked a widespread sell-off, affecting other major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin. Following these events, Interpol issued a "red notice" for Kwon's arrest in September 2022. After fleeing from Singapore to Serbia, Kwon was eventually apprehended in Montenegro while attempting to board a flight to Dubai in March 2023.

In June 2023, Kwon received a four-month jail sentence in Montenegro for irregularities involving forged documents. In an earlier development, Hon Chang-joon, Kwon's former finance officer at Terraform Labs, was extradited to South Korea after completing a prison term in Montenegro for fraud. As the legal proceedings unfold, both the US and South Korea are keenly watching the case that underscores the broader challenges faced within the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency space.
