Ransom note claims Nancy Guthrie died after abduction

A ransom note that appeared in February claimed that 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, had died after she was kidnapped from her Tucson home in January.

The note was one of two sent to the family and to news media, the first demanding millions in bitcoin for her release and the second stating that she had died and apologising for the mistake.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the investigation is still active but declined to confirm the notes’ authenticity. The FBI and other agencies have spent months following leads in the case.

The family believes the letters are real and says law‑enforcement is asked not to release details while the search continues. They have offered a one‑million‑dollar reward for information leading to Nancy’s return.

The case has drawn national attention as NBC’s Savannah Guthrie and her family publicly display their hope that her mother is still alive and working closely with authorities.
