In an alarming incident Saturday, a private jet crashed onto a Texas motorway near Laredo Airport. The jet was on a flight from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin, Texas, when it reported major mechanical problems, leading to the emergency landing.
Bystanders, among them a homeowner and a delivery truck driver, rushed to the scene and assisted first responders. Using a shovel and a sledgehammer, they opened the aircraft’s door and pulled five passengers out of the wreckage. Video footage shows the chaotic scene, with thick smoke and flames surrounding the jet.
The incident left one of the six people on board dead; the identity of the deceased has not yet been determined. Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition.
Laredo Police have secured the site and declared a crush zone. Loop 20, the major motorway, was shut down for the investigation and is expected to remain closed until Wednesday. Federal authorities, including the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board, are involved in the probe.
An investigator from the Laredo Police Department noted that one vehicle was struck by debris as the plane crashed onto the motorway, though investigators are still determining which part of the aircraft impacted the vehicle. Five first responders themselves received treatment for smoke inhalation.
