French Riots Aftermath: Cleanup in Marseille Amid Ongoing Tensions

After a frenzied weekend of riots that rattled cities from Paris to the southern port of Marseille, workers are already clearing the wreckage of more than 600 looted shops, while police maintain an elevated presence under a city‑wide curfew that remains in place.

The violence erupted across France in response to rising discontent over economic hardship and perceived police brutality. In Marseille, the damage was especially severe, with thousands of looted windows and smashed storefronts now being inspected by local authorities and cleaning crews.

BBC correspondent Nick Beake, reporting from the port city, said that underlying grievances, such as job insecurity and a sharp spike in living costs, have fed a growing wave of social unrest that has found its most visible expression this past weekend.

Policymakers say the curfew will remain until the city’s security situation stabilises, but residents and shopkeepers are calling for a comprehensive plan that manages both the physical rebuilding and the social tensions that spurred the protests.
