SHORTS WASHINGTON (AP) — Cage-match fighting is coming to the White House to celebrate President Donald Trump, a prominent supporter of cage-match politics.
In the weeks ahead, teams will construct a 6-foot wire-mesh octagonal ring on the lawn, where UFC fighters will engage in various martial arts disciplines during a June 14 show timed for Trump’s 80th birthday and the U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations.
This display of fierce competition aligns with Trump’s combative charisma and his promotion of extreme masculinity in politics. Trump remarked, “I have respect for fighters, you know, when you can take 200 shots to the face and then look forward to the second round,” in an interview with podcaster Logan Paul while campaigning for his second term.
Trump made history as the first sitting president to attend a UFC event, witnessing a 2019 fight that was halted due to severe injuries. The popularity of the UFC, often considered brutal by many, particularly among younger men, is a clear reflection of Trump’s brand of politics.
“A lot of people don’t understand fighting and they think fighting is about anger. It’s not. If you’re angry when you fight, you’ll lose,” said MMA referee and commentator “Big John” McCarthy.
Trump’s upcoming UFC event intends to feature top fighters, despite criticism over the absence of well-known names like Jon Jones and Conor McGregor. Ronda Rousey, a former champion, expressed disappointment over the event's card, citing it as falling short of expectations.
The event, which has been in the works with support from UFC president Dana White, is generating buzz as fans anticipate championship fights featured on the card. The White House aims to distribute 85,000 free tickets for the spectacle, which will be broadcasted live on Paramount+.
As the MMA world continues to grow, so does the intersection of politics and sport, with many observers noting Trump's use of UFC as a means to bolster his image as a fighter in the political arena. This unique celebration is set against the backdrop of a tense political environment, further intertwining entertainment and governance.
