CHICAGO (AP) — As immigration enforcement takes on a new form under the Trump administration, many Chicago residents find themselves in a state of unease. Recent months have seen a surge in arrests as federal agents crack down on undocumented immigrants across the city and its suburbs.
The situation poses critical questions as lawsuits against the government mount. Activists and community members are not letting their guard down, fearing a resurgence of aggressive enforcement tactics.
“I feel a sense of paranoia over when they might be back,” said Santani Silva, an employee at a vintage store in Pilsen, a neighborhood with a large Mexican community. “People are still afraid.”
Arrests Continue Amid Reduced Intensity
Though recent weeks saw a decline in activity after a highly publicized immigration enforcement operation, reports of arrests continue to emerge. During a two-month period, an aggressive campaign led by Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino resulted in significant police presence, including armed agents and helicopters used to apprehend suspected violators.
Despite the recent lull, immigrant advocates warn that the operations are far from over. Brandon Lee from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights stated, “I don’t think it will be over.”
Broadview: The Epicenter of Tensions
The suburb of Broadview, with a history of housing an ICE processing center, has borne the brunt of federal operations. Protests have escalated, bringing tensions to a boiling point. Community leaders have declared a civil emergency due to bomb threats and violent protests.
Mayor Katrina Thompson stated, “I will not allow threats of violence or intimidation to disrupt the essential functions of our government.”
Questionable Practices in Arrests
The Department of Homeland Security claims over 3,000 arrests have been made, but available data reveals that very few of those arrested had serious criminal backgrounds. Approximately only three percent of immigrants detained over recent months posed a “high public safety risk.”
Lawyers and activist organizations continue to question the motivations behind these operations. Many are pursuing legal action against the tactics used, noting that several detainees are eligible for bond but remain incarcerated amidst ongoing appeals.

As lawsuits proliferate against the federal agents for misuse of force and other claims, troubling incidents, including a fatal shooting during an ICE operation, have come to light. Publically, the tragic death is under investigation, with pressure mounting for a thorough examination by authorities, including international calls for accountability.

Residents like Eleanor Lara, who is apprehensive about the visibility of her Venezuelan husband, express deep mistrust. “We’re still sticking home,” she remarked, highlighting a chilling effect that ripples through the immigrant community.
