The FBI confirmed that FBI Director Kash Patel's email account has been hacked by a group associated with Iran, leading to the leak of his private emails and photos online. The group, identified as the Handala Hack Team, publicly released Patel's purported resume and personal photographs on their website, declaring, This is just our beginning. They went on to question the security measures in place at the FBI, asking, If your director can be compromised this easily, what do you expect from your lower-level employees? The FBI responded, stating the information accessed was historical and did not involve any sensitive government data.
This hacking incident isn't the first targeting Patel; he was also compromised in 2024, shortly before his appointment to the FBI. Photos claimed to be from Patel's email account showcased him in various settings, including social situations with cigars and liquor, which have since circulated online with Handala's logo. The BBC has not verified these leaks independently.
Handala stated that they breached Patel's account as a response to the FBI's seizure of their domains linked to hacking operations and the federal reward of $10 million for information on such attacks. Earlier in March, Handala also claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on U.S. medical technology firm Stryker. The U.S. Justice Department recently seized several Handala domains used for spreading propaganda and conducting operations targeting adversaries of Iran.
