MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Mexican immigrant was hospitalized earlier this month due to severe facial and skull injuries sustained while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Alberto Castañeda Mondragón suffered multiple skull fractures and life-threatening brain hemorrhages, leading medical professionals at Hennepin County Medical Center to question the circumstances around his injuries.
ICE initially claimed that Castañeda Mondragón attempted to flee while handcuffed and ran into a brick wall. However, medical staff disputed this explanation, asserting that such injuries were inconsistent with an accidental fall or an attempt to run. It was laughable, if there was something to laugh about, explained a nurse who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the situation.
Injuries Counter ICE's Narrative
Multiple healthcare professionals expressed serious concerns regarding Castañeda Mondragón's condition, noting that his injuries were not consistent with ICE's claims. Interviews with a doctor and five nurses revealed that they believe the injuries suggest he was violently treated during the arrest and subsequent detention.
Castañeda Mondragón was alert and communicating initially but began to deteriorate quickly, court records indicate. Following his arrest on January 8 near St. Paul, he was brought to an ICE processing center and later transferred to a hospital due to the extent of his injuries.
A Profile of the Injured Immigrant
Castañeda Mondragón, originally from Veracruz, Mexico, had lawful immigration documents when he entered the U.S. in 2022 and he co-founded a construction company shortly after. His lawyers argue that he was racially profiled during an immigration crackdown, emphasizing that he had no criminal record.
His family members are now concerned about the significant costs associated with his medical care and recovery, as he is expected to face a lengthy rehabilitation process while dealing with memory loss attributed to his head injuries.
