In a moment celebrated by supporters and family, Donald Trump has been named Time Magazine's Person of the Year for 2024—his second time receiving the accolade. The publication previously awarded him this recognition in 2016 following his presidential election win. In a letter to readers, Time Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs emphasized Trump's ability to "marshal a comeback of historic proportions" and highlighted his role in driving a "once-in-a-generation political realignment."

Trump's acknowledgment coincided with a ceremonial event as he rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, accompanied by chants of "U-S-A" from jubuliant supporters. In an interview with Time, Trump outlined his plans for his upcoming term, pledging to evaluate "case-by-case" the convictions of his supporters who faced legal consequences after the Capitol riot in January 2021 and promising to issue pardons where warranted. He additionally affirmed his commitment to fostering an unprecedented economy and "substantially" cutting taxes.

Time's annual tradition—originally called "Man of the Year" since 1927—honors individuals or movements that significantly influence events over the year. Previous notable winners include environmental advocate Greta Thunberg, former President Barack Obama, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Pope Francis.

Trump's win was acknowledged by Time editors, who noted he achieved the presidency again in a groundbreaking political comeback that activated young male voters, leading him to a noteworthy popular vote win and a clean sweep of all swing states. The 2024 election has historical implications, as Trump is now the oldest person to assume the presidency and the first convicted felon elected to the office, after being found guilty of 34 counts of fraud earlier this year.

Throughout the campaign season, Trump conveyed his vision for a second presidential term, indicating a desire for significant reforms in the U.S. immigration system and plans to deport millions. Reflecting on his past, Trump expressed disappointment in 2015 when he was not chosen for the magazine cover, but later celebrated receiving the honor in 2016: "It means a lot, especially me growing up reading Time magazine. And, you know, it's a very important magazine," he stated.

Despite this honorary title, Trump has continued to voice discontent with Time's past selections, such as when Taylor Swift was named Person of the Year in 2023.
