Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin in Dublin on Tuesday.

This visit marks the first official trip to Ireland by a Ukrainian president and first lady.

President Zelensky will also meet newly-inaugurated Irish President Catherine Connolly for a courtesy call, as confirmed by the Irish government.

Furthermore, he will attend the inauguration of the Ireland-Ukraine Economic Forum, alongside Tánaiste (Irish deputy prime minister) Simon Harris and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee.

'Visit at a critical time'

Over 120,000 Ukrainian refugees have sought asylum in Ireland since the onset of the war in Ukraine in February 2022. While some have returned, about 80,000 are estimated to be still residing in Ireland.

The Irish government has emphasized the visit as an opportunity to reinforce the very close and warm relations between the two countries.

The Taoiseach remarked, The Ukrainian people have inspired the world in their brave defense of their country and its sovereignty since it was brutally and illegally invaded by Russia. He stressed the importance of supporting Ukraine in its ongoing defense efforts.

President Zelensky's visit is seen as timely for reinforcing political and economic solidarity as Europe seeks a just resolution to the conflict.
