White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will step down from her position at the end of the month, President Donald Trump announced.
Leavitt, whom the president called one of his “most trusted aides,” cited a desire to devote more time to her young children as her main reason for stepping away, Trump posted on social media.
'Karoline will now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party,' Trump added.
Leavitt, 28, became the youngest White House Press Secretary in history when she was appointed last year. She has served under Trump in various capacities, from assistant press secretary to national press secretary during his 2024 campaign, and later as communications director for former Representative Elise Stefanik.
She returned to work on her maternity leave after giving birth to a second daughter, balancing a demanding job with motherhood. In a recent X post, she reflected on her experience: 'Being a mother and welcoming a new baby while working in one of the most demanding jobs in the world has been the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life.'
Leavitt’s departure comes as she prepares to shift her focus to her family life. The White House has yet to announce a replacement; potential candidates include Vice‑President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, or others within the administration. Fox News featured Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller praising Leavitt as a “close friend and role model,” noting that their collaboration will continue beyond her tenure. The administration’s next move on the spokesperson role will be closely watched by political analysts and media analysts alike.
