On May 12, 2026, Ukraine and Russia exchanged 205 prisoners of war on Friday, mere hours after a tragic missile strike in Kyiv left 24 dead, including three girls. The missile attack, which obliterated a block of flats, followed a short-lived ceasefire agreement earlier in the week.
President Zelensky remarked that most of the Ukrainian prisoners released had been detained since 2022, emphasizing their long suffering in captivity. The swap, which is part of a plan for a larger exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side, was evidently overshadowed by the grief and despair in Kyiv.
The missile attack on a residential area saw a civilian death toll including 12-year-old Lyubava Yakovleva, whose tragic loss highlighted the indiscriminate violence of the conflict. In the aftermath, rescue operations lasted 28 hours, revealing the devastating impact of the strikes on urban civilian infrastructure.
Additionally, Ukrainian drone strikes also targeted areas in Russia, resulting in at least four fatalities, including a child, in the city of Ryazan, where debris inflicted significant damage to residential buildings.
As the day of mourning unfolded in Kyiv, with citizens paying tribute to the lives lost, President Zelensky criticized Russian actions, stating that such attacks are designed to deliberately inflict suffering and destruction on civilians. The war continues to escalate, with both nations preparing for further military engagements.
