A Russian drone attack on a market in southern Ukraine has killed five people and injured 21, including a 14-year-old girl, according to the prosecutor general's office. The attack took place at 09:50 (06.50 GMT) in the town of Nikopol, situated across the Dnipro river from territories occupied by Russia since their large-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Regional prosecutor images depict a scene of chaos, with market kiosks destroyed and debris scattered across the area. This tragedy follows a pattern of increasing violence, as at least 15 civilians were reported dead from drone and missile strikes across Ukraine just a day before this attack.

In the midst of this violence, Ukraine's defense forces have carried out drone and missile strikes targeting the southern Russian city of Taganrog, resulting in at least one fatality and four serious injuries. Nikopol is no stranger to conflict, with almost half of its 100,000 residents having fled to safety due to ongoing dangers. On this occasion, however, the strikes hit a busy market area, leading to significant casualties.

Further investigations are underway, with authorities treating the attacks as potential war crimes. The situation remains critical as Russia reportedly launched close to 300 drones against Ukraine in a single attack that night, contributing to chaos across various regions, including Kharkiv and Sumy. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian military official has blamed the violence on Russian air defense operations.

Despite the chaos, political dynamics remain complex, with President Volodymyr Zelensky extending a truce offer for the Easter holidays—a gesture that remains unreciprocated by Moscow. Amidst these evolving situations, the humanitarian toll of the conflict continues to escalate, drawing attention to the urgent need for peace and resolution.
