Rumours of a major prisoner release from Belarus had been swirling for a couple of days, yet no names were revealed until all were safely out. In total, 123 political prisoners have been released, among them several prominent opposition politicians, human rights activists, and journalists.
Maria Kolesnikova, recognized for her vibrant red-lipsticked smile, was among those freed. Captivating footage of her celebrating liberty and reuniting with fellow prisoners swiftly circulated on social media. It's a feeling of incredible happiness to see those who are dear to me, to hug them and realise we are all free, she expressed, emphasizing her longing for all those still imprisoned.
Not only Kolesnikova but also Viktor Babaryka, a banker and former presidential candidate, and Nobel Peace prize winner Ales Bialiatski were part of the release. All had been imprisoned due to their opposition to President Alexander Lukashenko's authoritarian regime, which faced unprecedented protests in 2020.
This release is the outcome of extensive negotiations, primarily led by the United States, culminating in a visit to Minsk by John Coale, Donald Trump's newly appointed special envoy. While Lukashenko appears to relish his newfound standing after years of isolation, the U.S. sanctions concerning potash—a key Belarusian export—have also been lifted.
The release of these individuals comes amid broader geopolitical maneuvering, especially concerning U.S.-Russia relations, as Belarus is seen as a crucial ally of Moscow amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Celebrations in Vilnius, Lithuania, where many of the released prisoners were taken, resonated with illuminated faces wrapped in the Belarusian opposition flag. Family members, like Tatsiana Khomich, Kolesnikova's sister, expressed joy for their reunions. However, the ordeal did not come without a questioning price, as other activists fear further oppression by Lukashenko's government following this gesture.
Addressing the crowd, Bialiatski urged continued efforts for those left behind bars, shouting, Optimism and activism! Never give up! echoing sentiments that while joy is found in freedom, the fight for justice must continue.
