Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a truce for Orthodox Easter, with Vladimir Putin stating that he has ordered Russian troops to cease fire in all directions for the weekend.
The announcement from Moscow comes after repeated calls for a ceasefire from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which had previously been ignored by the Kremlin.
Putin has declared the truce will begin at 16:00 local time on Saturday, April 11, and last through Easter Sunday, urging Ukraine to follow the example set by Russia. He also instructed his forces to remain vigilant for potential provocations and aggressive actions.
Ukrainians may bristle at the tone of Russia's announcement, but Zelensky responded by stating that Ukraine is "ready for symmetrical steps," emphasizing the need for a peaceful Easter devoid of threats.
Earlier this week, Zelensky had outlined his request to the United States to communicate a holiday weekend truce proposal to Moscow as a first step towards peace.
For the soldiers along the extensive frontline in eastern Ukraine, any pause in fighting would be a welcome respite from relentless drone attacks. Civilians, too, would benefit from a brief reprieve from the constant threat of air raids and missile strikes.
However, the announcement of a truce does little to alleviate skepticism about its potential effectiveness in light of previous claims of ceasefire that have been violated. Past experiences, such as last year's energy truce, have led to doubts regarding Russia's commitment to genuine peace efforts.
What Ukraine ultimately desires is a full and stable ceasefire that sets the stage for negotiations to end the ongoing invasion. In contrast, Moscow seeks to finalize a peace deal before addressing a ceasefire, leading to accusations that Russia lacks genuine intent for resolution.
Despite several rounds of diplomatic talks facilitated by the United States, the peace process remains stymied, with concerns that without a concerted effort from both sides, this latest truce may mirror prior failed attempts.
