Russian authorities have identified three suspects involved in the shooting of high-profile military figure Lt Gen Vladimir Alexeyev. Among them is Lyubomir Korba, a Ukrainian-born Russian citizen, alleged to have executed the attack.

The Investigations Committee of Russia (SK) has stated that Korba entered Moscow in late December with a mission reportedly assigned by Ukrainian intelligence services to conduct a terrorist attack, an assertion Kyiv has since denied.

Alexeyev, aged 64 and second in command at the GRU—the Russian military's intelligence agency—was attacked on Friday while in a residential block in the northwest outskirts of Moscow. Following surgery, he has regained consciousness, as reported by various Russian media outlets.

According to spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko, Korba fired three shots before fleeing the scene and was apprehended shortly thereafter in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he was subsequently extradited back to Russia. Footage from Russian state television showed security officials escorting Korba off a plane upon his return.

Additionally, it was revealed that the authorities discovered the murder weapon at the attack site—a Makarov pistol fitted with a silencer. Forensic tests are currently underway to analyze the firearm.

The situation escalates as Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed for help in capturing Korba.

Terrain within the Moscow region has grown increasingly violent, with Alexander’s attack marking the latest in a series of attempts against high-ranking military officials since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Past attacks have included the targeting of Lt Gen Igor Kirillov and Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov, both of whom were killed under violent circumstances within Moscow.

The Kremlin's assertion places blame on Kyiv, as Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has branded the events as internal Russian matters. The escalating narrative around the assassination attempts exemplifies the ongoing tensions and ongoing conflicts stemming from the Ukraine war, with both nations accusing each other of targeting military and political figures.
