Estonia announced that a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone within its airspace, suspected to be a Ukrainian drone misdirected by Russian electronic jamming. Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur stated that a Romanian F-16 was responsible for firing the missile that brought down the drone, which fell into a marshy region without causing any reported damage.

In response, Ukraine criticized Russia for allegedly rerouting Ukrainian drones toward Baltic states and apologized to Estonia and its Baltic neighbors for the unintended violations. The drone incident continues a pattern of recent drone incursions reported by Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, drawing attention to Moscows characterization of these nations as supportive of Ukrainian operations targeting Russia.

This incident comes on the heels of political turmoil in Latvia, where Prime Minister Evika Silina resigned amid controversy over similar drone incursions. Earlier this month, two Ukrainian drones hit an empty oil storage site in Latvia, which Ukraine attributed to electronic jamming by Russia.

The drone was shot down near Võrtsjärv Lake around noon local time, after being tracked from Latvia, and its debris reportedly landed 30 meters from the nearest residence. Pevkur indicated that Estonia has not authorized airspace use to anyone but its allies and affirmed cooperative defense efforts in the region against potential threats from Russia.

As tensions escalate, there are growing fears in the Baltic states regarding possible Russian provocations aimed at testing NATO's resolve. In related news, Russian Intelligence has claimed that Ukraine plans to launch attacks from the Baltic territories, a charge that Latvia has firmly denied as misinformation.
