An Iranian missile strike has hit the town of Dimona in southern Israel, near to a nuclear facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated it was not aware of any damage to the nuclear research facility, located about eight miles (13km) outside Dimona.
Iranian state TV reported that the strike was in response to an alleged attack on its Natanz nuclear facility earlier that day. The IAEA noted that no increase in off-site radiation levels had been reported following the Iranian facility attack.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called for 'maximum military restraint' especially around nuclear sites. In the aftermath of the Dimona strike, Israel's ambulance service treated 40 individuals, with 37 sustaining mild injuries and a ten-year-old boy in serious condition. Additionally, 68 were treated for injuries sustained in nearby Arad.
Describing the situation in Arad as 'very severe,' emergency medical technician Yakir Talkar reported that many were wounded with varying degrees of injury. Israel is investigating how the missiles managed to bypass its air defense systems. According to fire authorities, interceptors launched during the strikes failed to hit their targets, leading to direct hits that resulted in significant damage.
The Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Facility, colloquially known as the 'Dimona reactor,' has long been suspected of housing Israel's undeclared nuclear arsenal, although this has never been officially confirmed. Israel remains the sole nuclear power in the Middle East, and any attacks on its nuclear capacity are approached with the highest seriousness.
Both Israel and the US consider the elimination of any potential Iranian nuclear capabilities a top priority. The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) condemned the attack on Natanz as a violation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons but reported no radioactive leakage or danger to surrounding residents.
As tensions continue in the region, both Israel and Iranian officials are likely to respond to the ongoing clashes with caution, given the severe implications for international security.
