In a worrying trend, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the target of intensified drone attacks from Iran, with significant implications for regional security and oil supply chains. The Fujairah port, the UAE's largest oil storage facility, and Dubai International Airport were among the locations hit recently, causing disruptions and raising alarms about the vulnerabilities of the Gulf's critical infrastructure.
Following a drone-related incident, flights at Dubai’s international airport were briefly suspended on March 16, as a fire erupted in the vicinity. This latest attack is part of a broader pattern of Iranian assaults aimed at undermining Gulf transport and energy security.
Moreover, the Fujairah port experienced severe disruptions following a drone strike, exacerbating concerns over logistics in a region crucial for energy supplies. A separate rocket attack in the Al Bahia area near Abu Dhabi resulted in the death of a Palestinian national, highlighting the increasing violence in the region.
The UAE's Ministry of Defence reported that their air defenses intercepted six ballistic missiles and 21 drones during the recent surge in attacks. Since the outbreak of ongoing conflicts tied to tensions with the US and Israel, Iran has reportedly targeted the UAE with over 1,900 missiles and drones.
This marked Monday's third drone strike near Dubai’s airport since the recent conflict began, further challenging the UAE's reputation as a safe and stable travel hub. Although some flights faced delays and cancellations, local businesses are attempting to rebound, with restaurants enticing visitors with special deals to maintain vibrancy amidst growing fears. Analysts suggest that the resilience of Dubai's economy, juxtaposed with persistent threats targeting its infrastructure, illustrates a complex crisis for the UAE.
Critically, experts emphasize that the strategic location of Fujairah enables it to continue serving as a vital alternative route for oil exports, especially when the Strait of Hormuz is compromised. However, attacks on crucial oil storage facilities serve as a stark reminder of the precariousness surrounding regional energy security as geopolitical tensions escalate.
