A controversial TikTok video by London-based cosmetic doctor Dr. Zayn Khalid Majeed, in which he critiqued Troye Sivan's appearance, has prompted a public backlash. In the two-minute clip, Dr. Majeed delineated several “problem areas” on the singer's face, supposedly exhibiting signs of aging, leading to widespread criticism directed at the doctor.
The backlash escalated as fans found the video to be unsought advice that triggered Sivan's long-standing insecurities about his body image. In response to the uproar, Sivan shared a heartfelt message on his Substack detailing how the video impacted his self-perception, expressing that it made him contemplate cosmetic surgery.
“What good is money and modern medicine if not to fix all of these flaws that this random... plastic surgeon told me I have?” Sivan wrote, highlighting the adverse effects such commentary has on individuals' mental health.
After deleting the video and reaching out to Sivan to apologize personally, Dr. Majeed stated he felt terrible for how his commentary affected the pop star. He expressed intentions to correct the course of his future content, focusing on fostering body positivity and acceptance of aging as a natural process.
Dr. Majeed acknowledged that while he started sharing educational content surrounding cosmetic procedures, he often shared celebrity-related analysis due to viewer engagement. However, he is now committed to avoiding perpetuating negative beauty stereotypes through his platform.
The incident serves as a reminder of the significant impact that public commentary on body image can hold, particularly in the age of social media, where influencers and doctors alike have the potential to shape public perception and self-worth.
