Walmart has initiated an immediate recall of specific shrimp products sold under its Great Value label due to the potential presence of a dangerous radioactive isotope, Caesium-137. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public warning advising against the consumption of frozen shrimp that may have been contaminated during shipping. While one tested sample of breaded shrimp was found to contain the radioactive substance, officials emphasized that this sample did not make it into U.S. commerce.

The recall affects shoppers across 13 states where these products were sold, including Alabama, Florida, and Texas, among others. Walmart has urged customers who purchased the shrimp to return them for a full refund at any of its store locations. A spokesperson for Walmart emphasized the company's commitment to safety, stating, "The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority." They further noted that the retailer is collaborating with the supplier to investigate the issue.

The shrimp in question originated from an Indonesian supplier, whose shipments have been subject to stricter scrutiny, with several being denied entry to the U.S. The FDA added that though the amount of Caesium-137 found in the shipment wasn’t sufficient for immediate health concerns, prolonged exposure could increase cancer risk. Officials highlighted that while no other shrimp products tested positive for contamination, the possibility of further cases could not be dismissed. As this situation develops, Walmart customers are urged to stay informed and heed safety precautions.
