Authorities in Romania have uncovered significant evidence suggesting a vast and coordinated effort to interfere in the country's presidential elections, predominantly executed through the social media platform TikTok. This operation is believed to involve cyber-attacks orchestrated by a state-sponsored actor, as disclosed by Romania's domestic intelligence agency.
Calin Georgescu, a far-right candidate known for his skepticism towards NATO and previous endorsements of Vladimir Putin, emerged significantly in the first round of voting, catching many off guard due to his previously low profile in Romanian politics. Intelligence assessments attribute his sudden popularity to a systematic and guerrilla-style social media campaign, featuring identical messaging and using influencers, said to originate from external locations to evade local oversight.
Revelations from declassified documents published by outgoing President Klaus Iohannis reveal alarming details regarding paid promotions supporting Georgescu on TikTok. Notably, these promotions were not labeled as campaign content, thereby breaching both TikTok's guidelines and Romanian electoral laws. Other candidates faced stricter scrutiny during the election process.
Despite claiming to have spent "zero" on election promotions, intelligence findings identified a specific TikTok account allegedly involved in remitting $381,000 within a month to influencers promoting Georgescu. In a defiant stance, Georgescu has asserted that the release of such documents is an orchestrated campaign to undermine his candidacy, stating, “I think it’s the first time in the history of the world when a state is organising an action against a candidate to stop him from running.”
Additionally, documents from a security council meeting after the first election round indicate that electoral websites' access data may have been compromised, with hackers—reportedly from Russia—attempting advanced cyber intrusions. These attempts to manipulate election-related data included a staggering 85,000 hack attempts, demonstrating tactics emblematic of state-sponsored operations.
As Romania prepares for its second-round vote between Georgescu and reformist candidate Elena Lasconi, investigations are underway to pinpoint the culprits behind the perceived interference. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, placing himself third in the presidential race, has declared his full endorsement of Lasconi, urging compliance from authorities to address the emerging evidence and hold any wrongdoers accountable.
Georgescu, aware of the heightened tensions, has issued warnings against potential social unrest, invoking parallels to past disruptions seen in Ukraine. As Public sentiment grows against alleged foreign influence, a pro-European Union protest has been organized, signaling a collective demand for Romania's ongoing trajectory toward European alignment.
