On Saturday, a 39‑year‑old woman named Yagi Anna was found dead in a hotel in Naha, the capital of Okinawa prefecture. Local police arrested 20‑year‑old U.S. Marine Devin Jacob Ballard of the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on the island for murder.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as a “brutal and heinous” robbery and murder, criticizing the U.S. for failing to maintain discipline among its troops in Japan.
The U.S. Marine Corps posted a statement on its social media channels offering condolences to the victim’s family and saying it is actively cooperating with Japanese authorities in the investigation.
Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi warned that incidents involving U.S. personnel “fill me with strong indignation” and that such events cause “significant anxiety” for local communities, urging the U.S. to prevent future occurrences.
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo announced full cooperation with Japanese government and police forces, while Japan’s foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass to discuss the incident.
