The crime was condemned by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who called it a "brutal and heinous" robbery and murder and urged the United States to enforce stricter discipline among its troops.
Japanese public broadcaster NHK identified the victim as 39‑year‑old Anna Yagi and the suspect as 20‑year‑old Devin Jacob Ballard, a Marine stationed at Futenma.
The Marine Corps released a statement on social media, saying it was cooperating fully with Japanese authorities and offering condolences to the victim’s family.
Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the body had been found early Saturday morning in a hotel in Naha City, declaring the incident "utterly inexcusable" and stressing the need to prevent such events.
The US Embassy in Tokyo noted full cooperation with local police, while Japan’s foreign ministry summoned US Ambassador George Glass to discuss the case.
Okinawa governor Genta Koja said the base’s lack of discipline is a recurring problem and called for U.S. measures to address the issue.
With tens of thousands of American troops stationed in Okinawa, incidents like this exacerbate local anxiety and intensify calls for a review of the Status of Forces Agreement.
