In a surge of hostile exchanges, President Donald Trump blasted the Iranian military on Truth Social after Washington announced strikes on Iranian defense sites following a downed U.S. helicopter in the Gulf. Trump called Iran’s forces "completely defeated" and warned that they would pay the price for their delays in negotiating a diplomatic deal.
Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi fired back, vowing the country would "leave no attack or threat unanswered" and accused the U.S. of suffering battlefield defeats. He slammed Washington for "damaging the diplomatic process through contradictory messages" and called for a minimum of stability to secure any negotiated settlement.
The U.S. struck Iranian sites near the Strait of Hormuz, targeting defence systems, ground control stations and radar sites. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it hit 21 U.S. bases in the region, striking facilities in Bahrain and Jordan, while Kuwait’s army said it intercepted an attack.
The exchange of threats reflects a broader geopolitical rift that could shut down diplomatic negotiations and broaden the security crisis that already pressures coastal states and international shipping lines. Experts warn that if either side follows through on its threats, the Gulf could see a sharp increase in hostile incidents, further destabilising the Middle East.
