In a surprising turn of events, Annie Ramos, the wife of US Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Blank, was released from ICE detention after being held for five days merely days after their wedding. The couple traveled to a military base in Louisiana to finalize Ramos's military spouse benefits when she was taken into custody under the Trump administration's immigration policies.
Annie, who came to the US from Honduras as a toddler, was arrested on April 2 and termed 'an illegal alien from Honduras' by immigration officials. Her husband expressed immense relief upon her release, calling the ordeal 'the worst days of my life.' He voiced his eagerness to start their lives together now that Ramos is back.
While Ramos was detained, significant efforts were made by family members and Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona, who contacted the military officials to advocate for her release. Kelly later remarked on the unnecessary difficulty the couple faced, asserting that such experiences should not be endured by military families.
Ramos now aims to regularize her immigration status while continuing her studies in biochemistry. In a statement, she expressed her desire to live with dignity and contribute to her community, reflecting on her long-term connection to the country.
Authorities note that Ramos entered the US illegally in 2005, when she was about 22 months old, and had subsequently been issued a removal order. The incident has prompted discussions around the current immigration climate, particularly regarding the treatment of families of service members, and has raised questions about national values amidst stringent immigration enforcement.
