In brief
The Ligue 1 fixture between PSG and Lyon was moved 24 hours to Monday, as French police barred the original Sunday kickoff and stringed out security for a second‑weekend protest wave. 550,000 demonstrators took to Paris’ streets last Saturday to rally against fuel prices, education costs and the overall cost of living, prompting clashes that spilled into other cities. The postponed match comes after a demand to also shift a NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints scheduled at Stade de France, increasing police demands in the capital. PSG sit second on the table, while Lyon lead, and the rescheduled clash now runs concurrently with London’s Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Paris St‑Germain’s Ligue 1 encounter with Lyon has been pushed back 24 hours to Monday, as the French capital readies for a second weekend of protests.
The match at Parc des Princes was originally slated to start at 19:45 GMT on Sunday but will now begin at 20:30 on Monday.
French police condemned the fixture on its original date after a statement from the Ligue de Football Professionnel demanded a postponement. The decision followed the government’s plan for a robust security operation against demonstrations slated for Saturday.
Last Saturday, roughly 550,000 people marched across Paris and other major cities to protest rising fuel costs, troubled schooling standards and the overall cost of living. The demonstrations, backed by unions and student groups, were marred by isolated incidents of violence, looting and property damage across the country.
The security concerns are compounded by an NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints scheduled at the Stade de France. A significant police presence will be required for that game, which is set to take place in Saint‑Denis, just a short distance from Place de la Bastille where the protests are expected to ignite.
Domestic football fixtures also feel the ripple effect: Toulouse’s home match against Troyes has been moved from Saturday to Sunday at the request of authorities. PSG remain second in the standings after seven matches, while Lyon lead the table on 14 points, ahead of the holders on goal difference.
The rescheduled clash clashes with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, adding another layer of complexity to the day. Injured PSG stars Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 Ballon d’Or winner, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among the contenders for the award.
