In brief

The Ligue 1 fixture between Paris St‑Germain and Lyon has been postponed from Sunday to Monday, as French police prepare for a week‑long wave of protests. Around 550,000 demonstrators marched across Paris, demanding lower fuel and living costs, while authorities also face a Sunday NFL game in the capital. The rescheduling, announced by the Ligue de Football Professionnel, will clash with Saturday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in London and could affect the domestic league’s tight race. PSG remain second in the table, vying for a place among Europe’s elite clubs.

Paris St‑Germain’s Ligue 1 match against Lyon has been pushed back 24 hours to Monday as the capital city readies for another weekend of protests. The encounter at the Parc des Princes, originally slated to kick off at 19:45 GMT on Sunday, will now take place at 20:30 on Monday.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) announced the postponement in a statement after French police prohibited the fixture from going ahead on its originally scheduled date.

Authorities are mounting a major security operation for demonstrations expected on Saturday, following the participation of around 550,000 people in last weekend’s protests. Participants demanded lower fuel prices, better education standards, and relief from the cost of living – issues that have compounded after several weeks of student unrest.

In addition to the civil unrest, the LFP had to contend with a Sunday NFL game – the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New Orleans Saints – at the Stade de France, an event that will draw significant police resources just 10 km from the planned protest sites.

Disruptions have already pushed other fixtures: Toulouse’s home game against Troyes was moved from Saturday to Sunday at authorities’ request.

PGS remain second in the table after seven matches, with Lyon leading on 14 points, while the match will also coincide with the Ballon d’Or ceremony being held in London that same day. The injured 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among the contenders for the award.
