OpenAI has shut down its artificial intelligence (AI) video-generation app Sora less than two years after its launch made headlines for creating realistic clips based on simple prompts.

Along with this move, OpenAI will also wind down its content partnership with entertainment giant Disney. OpenAI stated that the discontinuation of Sora was part of a strategic focus on other developments, such as robotics that assists individuals with physical tasks.

A spokesperson from Disney expressed respect for OpenAI's decision, acknowledging the shift in their priorities.

Disney plans to engage with different AI platforms to explore how to responsibly utilize AI technology without infringing on intellectual property rights.

OpenAI confirmed that the closure includes the cessation of both Sora's consumer app and the professional online platform. They have clarified that their commitment to developing video-generation tools will not continue, emphasizing a shift towards creating advanced AI forms capable of completing tasks with minimal human oversight.

OpenAI intends to leverage the technology from Sora to enhance robotics, maintaining that its image-making tools within ChatGPT remain unaffected.

Sora, which launched in 2024, was initially met with enthusiasm due to its high-quality AI-generated videos. However, it also raised copyright concerns, particularly after Disney licensed its intellectual property for use within Sora, allowing users to create videos featuring iconic characters like Mickey Mouse and Yoda.

As the AI video-making landscape becomes more competitive, Sora faced pressures from emerging competitors, marking a turbulent period in the intersection of technology and entertainment.
