ALAMEDA, Calif. — Tensions escalated late Thursday night when law enforcement officers discharged their weapons at a vehicle that backed into a U.S. Coast Guard base in Alameda, California. This incident occurred just hours after protests against federal immigration enforcement took place at the same location.

According to a statement from the Coast Guard, the confrontational vehicle appeared to be a U-Haul truck that attempted to ram into the base shortly before 10 p.m. Officers on-site issued verbal commands for the vehicle to halt, but the driver failed to comply, prompting law enforcement to take action to protect personnel.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported among Coast Guard personnel, and the vehicle ultimately fled the scene. The FBI has since initiated an investigation into the shooting.

The day's earlier events included protests at the base where demonstrators rallied against the presence of federal immigration agents, emphasizing a community sentiment to 'Protect our neighbors' and calling for an end to immigration enforcement in the Bay Area.

Earlier, President Donald Trump had called off a plan to deploy federal agents to San Francisco after discussions with local leaders, including Mayor Daniel Lurie and business executives, contradicted the necessity for federal intervention due to a perceived decline in crime.

Coast Guard Island, the site of this confrontation, is a restricted federal area, which generally does not allow public access without special permissions. The base has been operational since 2012, providing support for Coast Guard missions along the West Coast.
