A recent inspection at the nation’s largest immigration detention facility revealed alarming violations of national standards, exposing detainees to excessive force, potential disease, and dangerous conditions. Conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Detention Oversight, the inspection highlighted 49 deficiencies at Camp East Montana in El Paso, Texas, during a three-day evaluation in February.

The findings are unprecedented; no other facility inspected this year reported more than 13 deficiencies. This report is scathing. Camp East Montana gets an F, stated attorney Randall Kallinen, who is representing a family of a deceased detainee from the facility. He emphasized that detainees face risks from both medical neglect and interactions with other detainees.

Inspection Shock

The inspection confirmed that Camp East Montana has been operating with serious oversight issues since its rush opening last summer. The report comes as ICE pauses the purchase of additional facilities intended to house thousands more immigrants and while a new contractor takes over operations after public outcry over treatment standards.

Notable issues included a lack of proper medical care, insufficient supervision leading to safety violations, and a failure to document instances of self-harm.

Voices of Concern

U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, who has engaged directly with detainees, called the report just a glimpse into the broader issues concerning the facility, questioning whether the conditions are being intentionally maintained to pressure detainees into self-deportation.

In response to the reported violations, ICE claims the new agreements will enhance medical services and overall conditions under stricter monitoring. However, skepticism remains high regarding their commitment to real change as conditions within the facility have reportedly stagnated.

The inspection details numerous other safety lapses, including improperly secured tools and inadequately documented uses of force, which further call into question the facility's operational integrity and the safety of its inhabitants.

Overall, the need for immediate reform at Camp East Montana is clear, as highlighted by the alarming results of the inspection and the ongoing consequences for detainees held there.
