In a tragic event that has shaken the local community, a gunman, Michael Halberstam, 37, who fatally shot a deputy in Vero Beach, Florida, has died from injuries sustained in the confrontation. The incident occurred when deputies were serving an eviction notice at a residence where Halberstam's mother was attempting to evict him.
During the altercation on Friday, Halberstam shot two deputies from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, including Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, who tragically lost her life in the line of duty. Another deputy sustained a shoulder injury, and a locksmith involved was reported to be in critical condition following surgery.
Sheriff Eric Flowers disclosed that the sheriff’s office had received multiple calls over the prior month about disturbances at the home, mostly initiated by Halberstam's mother. Yet, despite the previous reports, deputies did not expect violence when they arrived at the scene.
“This was a standard call for service,” declared Sheriff Flowers, indicating that there was nothing in Halberstam's record that would have made deputies anticipate trouble.
Deputy Sweeting-Mashkow, who had served for 25 years, was posthumously promoted to sergeant in recognition of her dedicated service. Sheriff Flowers expressed deep sorrow over her murder and highlighted the profound loss felt within the department, stating that her team will be affected by this tragedy forever.
