Brown, 37, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai, as per Miami police spokesman Mike Vega. He was subsequently flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is being held pending extradition to Miami.

Details surrounding why Brown was taken to New Jersey first, or how long he had been in Dubai, remain unclear. He has posted on social media several times from the region over the last few months.

According to an arrest warrant, the incident on May 16 involved Brown allegedly seizing a handgun from a security staffer after a boxing match and shooting at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, the individual he had previously been in a fistfight with. Nantambu reported that one of the bullets grazed his neck.

It is currently unclear if Brown has legal representation, and no details have emerged about when he might be returned to Miami. An attempted murder charge in Florida could lead to a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

Having spent 12 years in the NFL, Brown was an All-Pro receiver known for his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers before a tumultuous end to his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. His off-field issues include various legal troubles, such as accusations of battery, domestic violence charges, and failure to pay child support. Notably, during a game against the New York Jets, Brown famously stripped off his uniform and left the field, leading to his release from the Buccaneers.
