IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A shooting during a fight in the nightlife district near the University of Iowa campus wounded five people early Sunday, including three students, according to police and university officials.

Multiple victims were transported to area hospitals due to gunshot wounds, with one person reported in critical condition and four others in stable condition, as stated by Iowa City police.

As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made. Authorities released images of individuals considered persons of interest in the ongoing investigation.

Responding to reports of significant disturbances, officers arrived at downtown Iowa City near a bustling pedestrian mall filled with bars and eateries when they heard gunfire. Social media videos captured chaotic scenes of numerous fights occurring outside an outdoor bar, causing patrons to flee in panic.

University President Barbara Wilson confirmed that among the injured, three were students and extended support to those affected within the campus community.

“This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state,” remarked Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, pledging state help for the investigation.

In the aftermath, the university sent alerts urging students to avoid the area, noting that early findings suggest that none of the injured students were targeted.

The University of Iowa serves around 31,000 students.
