NEW YORK (AP) — A tragic mid-air incident at LaGuardia Airport resulted in the deaths of the pilot and copilot after their Air Canada regional jet collided with a fire truck on the runway. This calamity unfolded around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday as the aircraft was landing after a flight from Montreal and struck the emergency vehicle responding to an unrelated airborne concern.

Audio from the control tower reveals frantic communications as the fire truck, initially given clearance, was urged to stop, but the communication did not avert tragedy. Images depicting the gruesome aftermath show the jet’s cockpit mangled, with the nose angled upward and debris scattered.

The pilot and copilot had not been named, but were confirmed to be from Canada. Additionally, about 40 passengers and crew members were hospitalized following the collision, with some suffering severe injuries, although most were treated and released by Monday morning. Two Port Authority personnel who were inside the fire truck were reported injured, but their conditions were not critical.

Current air travel operations have been severely impacted, with LaGuardia’s closure expected to last until at least 2 p.m. on Monday as investigations commence. This incident arrives during a peak travel season, exacerbating frustrations among travelers due to an ongoing government shutdown affecting airport staffing.

While the role of the government funding shutdown in this incident is uncertain, it highlights the considerable pressures on air traffic controllers and airport staff. Although controllers are deemed essential employees, their work conditions have been strained during previous shutdowns, and the current one has led to significant disruptions across the nation's air travel system.

As inquiries into this calamity are underway, further updates will be provided. For now, the future of operations at one of America's busiest airports remains uncertain.
