17 Injured as Tourist Train Overturns During Cártama Tapas Festival
A small red tourist train tipped over on Santo Cristo road in the southern Spanish town of Cártama after 21:30 local time, leaving 17 people injured. The accident was part of the free train service that is a feature of the annual "Ruta de la Tapa y el Cóctel" event.
The wagon was carrying about 30 passengers when it overturned while turning at a traffic crossing. Emergency crews reached the scene quickly and treated the injured; four were later taken to a nearby hospital, including three children. None of the victims suffered serious injuries according to local authorities.
The incident occurred a few minutes into the event, which runs from 10 to 14 June and encourages guests to visit local restaurants and bars for free tastings and a chance to win prizes through a stamp‑raffle scheme. The train’s map route has been paused and the service is suspended for the remainder of the weekend while investigations continue.
Cártama lies only 17 kilometres from Málaga and is a short drive away from the luxury resort town of Marbella, making it a popular stop for visitors touring the Costa del Sol.
