NASHUA, N.H. — An explosion sparked by a natural gas leak occurred on Monday at a mental health center in Nashua, resulting in injuries to three firefighters while all building occupants managed to evacuate safely. The incident took place at the Greater Nashua Mental Health facility, leading to a partial collapse of the structure. Firefighters responded to a 911 dispatch concerning a gas odor just before the explosion occurred.

State Fire Marshall Sean Toomey reported that approximately 40 people were present during the event. Nashua Fire Chief Steve Buxton confirmed that the injured firefighters were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities issued warnings to residents and businesses in the vicinity, advising them to extinguish any flames and prepare for possible evacuation. One local resident, Jesci Larochelle, felt her house tremble from the explosion, describing the sensation like a large tree falling nearby.

The Greater Nashua Mental Health Center, located in a heavily commercial area, offers vital services including substance misuse counseling, as well as support for deaf and older adults. Aerial footage revealed extensive damage, with flames and smoke engulfing the debris.

Governor Kelly Ayotte expressed gratitude for the quick and brave actions taken by emergency personnel. She noted that unfavorable weather conditions hampered firefighting operations on-site. This incident comes on the heels of a tragic gas explosion at a nursing home in Pennsylvania that resulted in multiple fatalities late last year.
