A Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 carrying 52 passengers and six crew members was struck by a firework during its descent to Midway International Airport in Chicago, according to airline spokespersons.
The incident occurred in the midst of nationwide celebrations for the United States’ 250th anniversary, when households and local authorities set off fireworks around the airport.
Pilot communications captured on air‑traffic control radio revealed that the aircraft was “just hit by a firework” at about 200 ft (61 m) above ground, although no injuries were reported.
Delta said the plane landed safely and taxiing to the gate, and inspectors found no damage to the aircraft apart from minor paint chips.
Chicago police confirmed an unknown object struck the aircraft and that the FAA received the report at approximately 20:30 CDT.
Officials warned of ongoing fireworks in homes near the airport’s approach lanes; the city has notified the police but has not yet revealed enforcement actions.
The FAA, United States air‑traffic control, and the airline are investigating the incident as part of routine aviation safety protocols.
