Arbel Yehud, an Israeli hostage, has emerged as a focal point in the ongoing crisis jeopardizing the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Abducted from her home in Nir Oz during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, Yehud has not been released as anticipated in the hostage exchange that was supposed to occur on January 19 and January 25, according to Israeli officials.

The 28-year-old, who was taken alongside her partner Ariel Cunio—also still being held captive—has become the last remaining female civilian hostage believed to be alive by the Israeli government. Concern surrounds another abducted woman, Shiri Bibas, who was taken with her two young sons. The Israeli military has raised alarms over their well-being, though reports of their deaths have not yet been confirmed.

Adding to the complexity of this hostage situation, Yehud's brother, Dolev, was initially presumed to have been kidnapped but was later declared dead by Israeli authorities after his remains were found in Nir Oz.

Despite the provisions of the cease-fire deal, which prioritized the release of female captives before soldiers, Yehud's release has been delayed. Speculation has arisen that she may be held by a different faction, namely Palestinian Islamic Jihad. A representative from this group indicated to The New York Times that her release could occur before the upcoming weekend.

As the situation develops and the cease-fire agreement remains precarious, the fate of Arbel Yehud and her immediate family continues to reflect the lingering crises between Israel and Palestinian groups, heightening tensions and fears within the affected communities.
