Clean lines, sweeping wings, and wide oval windows: Gulfstream's G700 stands out at the Singapore Airshow, Asia's largest aviation and defense trade fair. This luxury aircraft has attracted long queues of eager visitors, highlighting the ongoing interest in private jets as manufacturers shift focus to a wealthier demographic.
With the cost of these aircraft running into the tens of millions, sales discussions continue on board, where potential buyers are enticed by the luxurious interiors that include spacious living areas and amenities such as a grand suite with a shower.
According to aviation intelligence firm WingX, global private jet flights soared to approximately 3.7 million in 2025, marking a 5% increase from the previous year and a staggering 35% rise since before the pandemic. This growth aligns with the increase of ultra-high-net-worth individuals, whose numbers have climbed by over 70% since 2020.
Scott Neal, head of worldwide sales at Gulfstream, notes a distinct shift of business aircraft catering mainly to larger corporations and wealthy individuals, emphasizing the need for efficient global travel. Competitors like Dassault and Bombardier are also vying for a piece of this profitable market.
Environmental criticisms have emerged, as private jets are among the most carbon-intensive modes of transport. However, manufacturers are countering with pledges of improved fuel efficiency and initiatives to use sustainable aviation fuel.
The demand for private jet travel, especially in regions like Southeast Asia, remains robust. Companies report significant increases in business in countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, and India, while the private jet market in China appears to be stabilizing after prior explosive growth.
Airlines, too, are pivoting to capture a more affluent clientele, as evidenced by developments from luxury carriers like Taiwan's Starlux, which is enhancing its premium cabin offerings.
As the number of ultra-rich individuals escalates, the trend towards high-end air travel is expected to continue, transforming the aviation landscape towards greater luxury and exclusivity.
