The Israeli military confirmed the death of Hamza Ziyadne, a 23-year-old Arab citizen of Israel, who was taken hostage during the Hamas-led assault on Israel in October 2023. His body was discovered in a tunnel beneath Rafah, Gaza, alongside that of his father, Youssef Ziyadne, who was also held captive. The discovery comes amid ongoing mediation efforts aimed at achieving a truce between Israel and Hamas.

Over 15 months following the onset of the conflict, around 98 hostages are still believed to be in Gaza, with nearly 36 being presumed dead by Israeli authorities. The realities of mortality have intensified anxiety amongst the families of those still unaccounted for. Prior to the identification of the Ziyadnes, no official presumption of death had been declared, portraying the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the wellbeing of remaining captives.

The circumstances of the deaths of Hamza and Youssef Ziyadne remain unclear, with reports suggesting that some hostages have either succumbed to Israeli airstrikes or faced execution at the hands of their captors. Israeli military spokesperson Nadav Shoshani stated that investigations into the exact nature of the Ziyadne brothers' demise are ongoing.

The brutal attack perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023, has claimed numerous lives, with Israeli authorities reporting 1,200 casualties and approximately 250 individuals taken hostage. Notably, at least 17 Arab citizens of Israel were among the fatalities during the assault, illustrating the widespread impact of the ongoing conflict within both Israeli and Palestinian communities.
