In brief

In a poignant recounting, the author's experience captures the essence of Pope Francis as both a leader and a human being during a challenging visit to Azerbaijan.

In 2016, while accompanying Pope Francis on an interfaith visit to Azerbaijan and Georgia, I witnessed firsthand his remarkable ability to navigate tense situations with grace and dignity. Despite the small Catholic populations in these countries—fewer than 1,000 Catholics in Azerbaijan and predominantly Orthodox Christians in Georgia—the pope's commitment to fostering dialogue among different faiths shone through. Arriving in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, was complicated by protests where demonstrators accused him of various offenses, including insufficient condemnation of homosexuality.During a meticulous procession in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, an unexpected mishap showcased the pope's calm demeanor amid external distractions. Alongside the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, who leads with an authoritarian grip, Pope Francis was greeted by both a military band and journalists. During this event, a sudden gust of wind blew off the pope's zucchetta—his distinctive white cap—leaving it on the ground behind him. The situation was tense; a trumpeter in the band visibly fretted over the incident, knowing any sign of disrespect towards the pope could draw ire in the tightly controlled state.Remarkably, the trumpeter stepped forward, reclaimed the zucchetta, and gently placed it back on the pope's head—a gesture that seemed almost instinctual, imbued with both tenderness and defiance. Throughout this unexpected moment, Pope Francis remained stoic, moving on without acknowledging the hat's return, and the tension dissolved into a shared moment of relief among the foreign press. This brief encounter encapsulated the essence of Pope Francis—a figure who can navigate political minefields with poise, respect, and a touch of unexpected humanity even amidst hostile circumstances. His diplomatic touch and unwavering calm during such delicate interactions serve as a timeless reminder of the powerful impact of kindness and respect in bridging divides.
