Tragic Air India Flight Crash: Identification Challenges Persist Amidst Grief

As relatives mourn, the intense heat from the Air India Flight 171 crash complicates DNA identification efforts for victims.

Three days post the Air India tragedy, only a fraction of bodies have been identified due to extreme temperatures at the crash site, leaving families in anguish as they await news of their loved ones.

The devastating crash of Air India Flight 171, which occurred on Thursday, has left a deep scar across the community as families of the victims grapple with the grief and uncertainty that follows such a catastrophic event. According to medical officials in Ahmedabad, where the flight crashed, the fierce intensity of the flames has rendered the identification of passenger remains a monumental challenge.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was reported to be carrying over 125,000 liters (33,000 gallons) of fuel when it crashed, creating a catastrophic explosion that officers believe raised temperatures at the site to as high as 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,700 degrees Fahrenheit). These horrifying figures demonstrate more than enough heat to incinerate human bodies, complicating efforts for forensic teams to identify the victims.

Health officials disclosed on Saturday that initial findings indicated that the intense heat had severely damaged the bodies, leading to significant difficulties in extracting usable DNA samples for identification. H.P. Sanghvi, director of the forensic lab responsible for processing DNA, was quoted saying, “The damage to the bodies makes collection and testing difficult.” This situation has led to frustration as only 35 out of the official death toll of 270 have been returned to their grieving families.

As anguished relatives wait outside mortuaries for answers, the emotional toll continues to mount. Families of loved ones, including those of Shubham and Shagun Modi, who were victims of this tragic incident, have expressed their deep sorrow and pent-up anguish as they seek closure in a situation compounded by the stark realities of modern aviation tragedies.
